15. THARAKULLE PATIDEV

She stood in front of the cupboard, as if making some life-altering decision. It was ridiculous—she knew it—but she couldn't help it. Tanirika held two salwar suits over her arm, each one a shade of deep color, one blue, the other maroon. She kept switching them back and forth in front of the mirror, squinting slightly as if examining them under a microscope. One was simple, the other just a little festive. Her lips were pressed together in concentration, but somewhere deep inside, a little part of her was annoyed with herself. Why was this suddenly such a big deal? Why did this small, unimportant choice matter so much today?
